Grey Roots Museum & ArchivesOne of the best ways to spend an afternoon is by traveling back in time, learning of the distant past, and being captivated by local history. At Grey Roots Museum in Owen Sound, you can take a trip through time with its county museum, archives, tourism services, theatre, café, gift shop, and meeting rooms. There are six exhibit galleries, special events, and children’s programs as well as Moreston Heritage Village that adjoins the main building.

Grey Roots Museum & ArchivesThe museum got its beginning with a few temporary exhibits in 1955.  In 1959 a building was obtained for an art gallery and museum.  More spacious facilities were obtained with the aid of the city of Owen Sound, and Grey County-Owen Sound Centennial Museum was opened in 1967. The museum continued to grow and they began to develop a heritage village.  In 2004 the museum with 6 of its heritage buildings along with the Grey County Archives (which was also running short of the room) moved to its present site off Highway 18.  They developed their present logo which is a multi-colored sheaf; each color represents a different element of Grey County.  Green for forestry, gray rock for the escarpment, red for fireworks or the celebration of people, yellow the county’s agricultural heritage and blue the water and many waterfalls.  The building was built to encompass all these elements even to a small waterfall in the foyer.  The village encompasses the period from 1850 to the 1920s and is still expanding. The Grey Roots Museum offers an exciting day away for children and adults of all ages and with any interests.

Grey Roots Museum & ArchivesFor children, the museum offers programs for holidays, P.D. days, early dismissal days, March break and summer vacation. Children are invited to take part in these great programs that make learning fun! Group tours and school visits are also available. The whole family is invited to participate in the many captivating events held throughout the year at the museum. In the spirit of the winter holidays, Grey Roots hosts “Moreston by Candlelight.” This evening provides visitors with an opportunity to truly experience what life would be like over a century ago as they visit the schoolhouse, log cabin, blacksmith shop and much more. Furthermore, events such as the Maple Sugar Moon Festival, Public Night Sky Viewing and Lecture Series provide the whole family with a chance to learn more about their interests while spending quality time together.
