Last year marked Canada 150, where Canadians came together to celebrate 150 years since Canada’s confederation and what it means to be Canadian. This year however, another place close to our hearts is turning the big 1-5-0; our own Kimberley, Ont. and the community is celebrating with an entire week of special events to honour the sesquicentennial.
The week kicks off on Saturday, September 15th, at the Kimberley Community Hall from 12-4pm. Opening remarks will be taking place at 12pm followed by two separate sittings of the ‘Anne of Green Gables Tea Room’ at 1pm and 2:30pm. The Tea Room features tea, coffee and baked goods along with special guest Kate Macdonald Butler who is the granddaughter of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. Guests are encouraged to dress in period attire and a prize will be given to the guest with the best “puffed sleeves”. Following the tea, Kate will be signing copies of the Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. Tickets can be purchased at any of the three Grey Highlands Library locations and the Kimberley General Store. There is even more to look forward to on Saturday though! The afternoon will also feature a pop-up of vendors, information displays and museums, as well as free horse drawn wagon ride historical tours on Grey Road 13 all taking place from 1-4pm.
On Monday, September 17th, at 7pm at the Kimberley Community Hall, Ojibway knowledge keeper and medicine man Glenn Trivett will be giving a presentation on Indigenous cultures and issues in “An evening with Glenn Trivett”.
Two days later, on Wednesday, September 19th, come and take part in “An Evening with Cecily Ross” author of The Lost Diaries of Susanna Moodie starting at 7pm at the Kimberley Community Hall. The author will have books for sale and will be signing copies. The evening’s admission is by donation and refreshments will be provided.
The week starts to wrap up on Friday, September 21st, when the Apples and Art Show opening gala commences at 7pm at the Kimberley Community Hall. The Apples and Art Show and Sale will then be taking place from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday — the perfect way to wrap up the week of celebrations!
We hope you will be able to attend these great special events happening in honour of Kimberley’s sesquicentennial. We are very lucky to have had our office in Kimberley for almost 20 years now and are thrilled to be a part of Kimberley’s ever growing history and look forward to celebrating alongside it. Happy 150 Kimberley!
